Tense Hamilton domestic standoff ends safely

1 min read

Several people are currently being interviewed by Police following a tense standoff with armed officers following a domestic incident in the Hamilton suburb of Frankton early this morning.

Sergeant Dave Raffan said officers were called to the address about 3.30am after reports a woman was being threatened by a man armed with a knife.

"On our arrival we found the 26-year-old male had the woman in the room and was armed with a large boning knife, a standoff ensued during which Police attempted to subdue the aggressive man who was threatening to kill both himself and the female.

"After an hour's negotiation the man was convinced the Police staff were there to help him and the woman was no threat and he was taken into custody. He is currently being interviewed and has been arrested for possession of a knife, further charges may eventuate."

Mr Raffan said though at the serious end of the scale this was not dissimilar to several incidents Police have been called to over recent days in the City.

"Our advice to people is to seek help before situations deteriorate to such a level as today. There are a number of Government and non-Government agencies as well as the Police dedicated to help people in difficult relationships and we ask people to make use of these resources before it becomes too late."
