Man in custody following Okato AOS callout

1 min read

New Plymouth Police say a man is now in their custody helping them to unravel an incident that occurred today following an armed callout to an Okato, Taranaki, address, early this afternoon.

Police including the Armed Offenders Squad from New Plymouth cordoned off the house and nearby area after it was initially reported that shots had been heard at the house and a woman had been shot in the leg.

AOS and police negotiators appealed to a man who had been waiting for police at a Cummings Street house. He gave himself up to police about 1.30pm without further incident.

A woman has been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance. The extent and nature of the woman’s injuries would appear to be consistent with a dog bite.

At this stage one 32 yr old male is in Police custody charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Enquiries are continuing.

No further information is available at this stage.
