Police applaud Waikato Stadium crowd's behaviour

1 min read

With another near capacity Waikato Police are very pleased with the behaviour of fans at today's game between Wales and Samoa with no arrests and only a small number of evictions.

Officer in charge of the Waikato's Rugby World Cup operation, Inspector John Kelly, said once again Hamilton had turned on a well managed, family friendly event that was incident free.

"We had four people removed from the venue because of intoxication but no arrests, given the large number of people both at the game and in town this is a testament to the thorough planning by all the agencies involved and the positive attitude of the public.

"The challenge now is ensuring everyone gets home safely, traffic flows up to Auckland are expected to be heavy and we're urging motorists to exercise patience and be prepared for longer traffic times than usual."

Mr Kelly said Police would be maintaining a highly visible presence on Hamilton streets as fans head from Waikato Stadium into the City.

"Our message remains the same as on Friday night, go out and have a good time, but not at the expense of others, watch your alcohol consumption and look out for one another.

"That way we'll all be back in two weeks time to enjoy the next match."
