The Serious Crash Unit is investigating an incident on the North West Motorway this afternoon in which a child passenger and a male driver have received critical injuries.

Police say that about 3.00pm on Wednesday 11 April 2007 a white Toyota Corona was travelling city bound on the NW Motorway when it collided with a bridge abutment near the Lincoln Road Off ramp.

The male adult driver [39 years] is in Auckland Hospital with serious head injuries.

Police have received information from witnesses that the male Maori driver of a Purple van, possibly a Mitsubishi L300 model, has stopped and assessed the scene and then immediately sped off, leaving the injured parties alone.

"We would like to speak to this van driver to ascertain exactly what has happened."
