Trampers found fit and well

1 min read

Police and volunteer Land and Search Rescue teams have just found two Wellington women fit and well after their unexpected night in the open.

Sergeant Anthony Harmer, head of the Wellington Police Search and Rescue operation, said Anita McGonigle (36) and Kim Dunne (39), both of Churton Park, were found shortly before 2.30pm today.

“Our priority now is getting the two friends out by four wheel drive vehicle, assessing if they need any medical check ups and then getting them home to their families,” Sergeant Harmer said.

He said search parties found the two women a short time ago on the Waiotaru Track heading towards Otaki Forks.

“It’s not immediately clear how they ended up on that track or where they were able to shelter for the night,” Sergeant Harmer said. “The good news is that they have been found and that they seem to be in good spirits despite their unplanned for night in the bush.

“We’ll fill in the detail at some later point but I imagine all the women want to do now is to get out and to be reunited with their families as soon as possible.”

Police and volunteer search teams will shortly be stood down.

Sergeant Harmer thanked people for their assistance. “The great outdoors is a wonderful place to be but people always need to remember to plan their journey, be well equipped and know the weather forecasts.

“It’s good news that Anita and Kim have been found. Hopefully their experience won’t have put them off future tramping expeditions.”
