Police Commissioner announces provisional appointments for commanders

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall is pleased to announce the provisional appointments of District Commanders for the Canterbury, Counties Manukau and Northland Districts.

They are Superintendent Gary Knowles, Canterbury District; Superintendent John Tims, Counties Manukau District and Superintendent Russell Le Prou, Northland District.

Commissioner Marshall said all three Superintendents bring many years of varied command, operational and managerial experience to their new positions.

Superintendent Gary Knowles, Canterbury
Currently District Commander Tasman Police District. Superintendent Knowles was appointed District Commander Tasman in February 2009 following a period as Area Commander for Christchurch Central between August 2005 and February 2007. Earlier roles included: O/C Wellington City Area CIB, O/C National Bureau of Criminal Intelligence, Relieving Area Commander Kapiti-Mana and several NCO positions in the CIB and Uniform Branches.

Superintendent John Tims, Counties Manukau
Presently Detective Inspector Counties Manukau CIB, appointed 2007.
Prior to 2007 he was Detective Senior Sergeant and O/C of the Child Abuse Team in the Counties Manukau CIB. Earlier positions included: DSS, O/C CIB Western and Eastern Areas of Auckland City District between 2002-04; Senior Sergeant, Emergency Response, Wiri 2001-02 and several other CIB and Uniform Branch NCO roles.

Superintendent Russell Le Prou, Northland
Relieved as Acting National Manager: Training for much of 2011. He also relieved as Acting District Commander Waikato between July 2010 and February 2011. Was Manager Investigations and Intelligence for the Waikato District between October 2009 and July 2010. Area Commander of Western Waikato between February 2007 and October 2009. Held a variety of roles in the CIB and Uniform Branches in the Waikato and Counties Manukau Districts.

The District Commanders will take up their new roles once their provisional appointments have been confirmed.
