Reefton boy's condition stable after crash

1 min read

A 16 year-old learner driver from Reefton remains in a serious condition in Christchurch Hospital after the vehicle he was driving crashed about 9.40pm on Saturday.

Mathew Lintott was driving a ute with three passengers when he lost control on an 'S' bend on Atarau Rd, about 6km from the Blackball turnoff.

Sergeant Brett Currie of Greymouth Police said the boys had been driving in convoy with another vehicle and had just come from doing skids at the entrance road to Pike River mine.

"It was raining at the time and it appears Matthew has lost control on the corner, slid off the road and hit a tree. The combination of speed, inexperience and road conditions has made this a very dangerous situation."

His condition this afternoon is stable.

A 16 year-old back seat passenger in the vehicle was discharged from Greymouth Hospital today. He suffered back and shoulder injuries.

The two other passengers were uninjured.
