Man drowns after falling from Kaikoura wharf

A Nelson man drowned last night after falling into the water at Kaikoura.

The 54 year-old had been fishing on the wharf with a friend when the fell into the water just after 11pm.
His companion saw him holding onto a wharf pile and ran off to raise the alarm.

The victim's body was found about an hour later 100 metres straight out to sea from where he fell by the Coast Guard vessel.

Senior Sergeant Peter Payne the victim was wearing heavy clothing and work boots. He said it appeared alcohol may have also been a factor.

Police are still working to notify the next of kin.
