Death referred to the Coroner

1 min read

The death of a 25-year-old man who died in Whanganui on 1 November is no longer being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the Coroner.

Yusef Zurich received a severe injury to his right arm at an address in Bedford Avenue and died a short time later in Whanganui Hospital. Police had been called to the address by neighbours who reported a disturbance about the time Mr Zurich was injured, and rumours began to circulate that the incident was gang-related.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby who led the investigation into the death said: "There were a number of intoxicated people at the address on the night and there had clearly been a physical altercation during the evening. However, after nearly two weeks of investigation we are satisfied that the dispute on the night was not gang-related and that no-one else was involved in Mr Zurich's death."

"At this stage nobody will be charged in relation to the physical altercation"

As the matter has now been referred to the Coroner there will be no further comment by Police.
