SH1 diversion in place after fatal crash

1 min read

Police and emergency services are currently on the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash on State Highway 1, approximately 10 kilometres north of Hunterville.
A female passenger of one of the vehicles has died at the scene, and the drivers of both vehicles are in a serious condition. One has been flown to Palmerston North hospital by helicopter, and the other taken to Wanganui Hospital.
Initial investigations indicate that a south bound vehicle has crossed the centre line and crashed into a northbound van which contained the deceased. The Police Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
State Highway 1 is currently closed and diversions are in place at Kei Kei Road, and Murimotu Road. Part of this diversion is on unsealed road and is not suitable for heavy vehicles, camper vans, or motorists not familiar with metal roads.
Alternate routes through central north island are via State Highway 49 / State Highway 4, and State Highway 3. Police urge motorists to use the alternate routes or delay travel if at all possible.
No further details are available for release at this point.
