1 min read

Christchurch Police have released the name of a man who died after being struck by a train near Ensors Road in the early hours of Sunday morning [22 April].

He was Erik Ruben Maurer, aged 20, of Germany. Mr Maurer had been in New Zealand on a work visa since October 2011.

Mr Maurer was struck by a train heading towards Lyttelton, approximately 200 metres east of Ensors Road, at around 12.30am on Sunday morning.

Police say at this stage it appears there are no suspicious circumstances to the death.

It is believed the man had been attending a party in Waltham prior to the incident, and was returning on foot to his accommodation in the central city. There are reports that he had been seen lying on the train tracks.

The death is now in the hands of the Coroner who will make a determination as to the cause of death.
