1 min read

A 16 month-old boy died in Starship Hospital at 1.40 this afternoon after his life-support system was turned off.

The baby was admitted to Starship on Tuesday evening in a critical condition due to injuries received when in the care of a relative. He had been taken to Ascot Hospital by family members on Tuesday evening but was transferred from there to Starship by ambulance.

The child, Sachin Dhani of Remuera, was the youngest of three siblings. A post-mortem examination of his body will be carried out tomorrow morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Beard of the Auckland City CIB is heading the homicide investigation. The Mt Wellington home, where Sachin is believed to have received his fatal injuries, was cordoned off on Tuesday night.

A scene examination got underway there late yesterday and will continue through until at least the end of tomorrow. No arrests have been made in connection with the child's death.
