Police say that they will continue their work to prepare for the retrial of David Bain following the announcement today by the Solicitor-General ordering a retrial.
Detective Superintendent Malcolm Burgess said a small team of Police based in Dunedin has already assessed the availability of the original witnesses and trial evidence and found it substantially intact. Police have established that all but three of the 91 original witnesses are available to give evidence and that all of the trial exhibits are available.
Mr Burgess said the team had also completed initial preparations for further inquiry and analysis of new evidence should a retrial be ordered. He said the enquiry team will now focus on that work and preparing all the available evidence for the trial. "That earlier preparation means we are well placed now to do this work - this is business as usual for the Police team."
Mr Burgess said people with any new evidence can reach the Dunedin based team through the Dunedin Central Police station (03) 471-4800. He said a 0800 number and other contact details would be released by Dunedin Police early next week.
As the matter is now back before the court Police will not be making any further comment about the case.
