Waikato Police are warning the public not to approach a convicted child sex offender who has breached supervision and is believed to be on the run in their District.

District Child Protection Coordinator, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene, said a warrant to arrest has been issued for 26-year-old Hamilton man, Michael Lesley STEVENS.

"STEVENS was convicted for offences, including child sex offences, in 2004 and has since been released from prison subject to strict supervision conditions.

"STEVENS has breached these conditions and is currently on the run and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He is considered a high risk offender and is believed to be actively avoiding Police.

Mr Greene said STEVENS has a history of using violence and carrying weapons and Police urge anyone who recognises him not to approach him but to ring 111.

A male Caucasian STEVENS is described as being of medium build and about 180cm tall.

Anyone with information on STEVENS' whereabouts is asked to contact Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200 or alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
