Police investigating a shooting incident on Auckland's Mayoral Drive where an unarmed officer was lucky to escape with his life shortly before 1 o'clock this morning, say a pistol holster is in the car used by the passenger who fired at the officer.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard addressed a media briefing this afternoon where he confirmed the Toyota Altezza that wanted man Murray Toleafoa was a passenger in, contains a pistol holster.
"We've done a cursory search of the vehicle and have seen a pistol holster in it although no weapon has been recovered or located yet.
"We've executed three search warrants at properties in Otara and Glen Innes today and we will continue to search for 30 year-old Murray Toleafoa and Nadia Ball until we find them.
"We do not want this search to end tragically for anyone. The best thing Mr Toleafoa can do is give himself up to Police. If any of his associates knows where he is, they should call Police."
Mr Beard said witnesses have described the firearm used as looking similar to a Police-issue Glock.
More than 20 investigators plus the Armed Offender's Squad and the Specialist Search Group have been working on the operation today and will continue until Murray Toleafoa is located.
The officer who was shot at has been interviewed and recalls at least one shot being fired at him.
"Police Officers carry out vehicle stops every day, 24/7. Last night's patrol could have ended in tragedy and it's not acceptable that people are driving around armed and, even worse, prepared to shoot at officers," Mr Beard said.
"Murray Toleafoa is affiliated to the Tribesmen outlaw motorcycle gang and I urge any member of the gang to contact Police - either anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 - or directly on 111 if they know where he is."
