Henderson Police Arrest Two Persons On Child Cruelty Charges

Henderson Police investigating serious injuries suffered by an 18 month old boy today arrested two persons on charges of cruelty to/or ill treatment of a child.

The victim is recovering in hospital from serious arm and leg injuries. These include a broken left femur, a fractured right arm, and severely swollen thigh.

The boy has been in Star Ship Children's Hospital since 23 July 2007. He has been living with his parents and three siblings at a West Auckland address.

Detective Sergeant Megan GOLDIE of the Henderson Police Child Abuse Team [CAT] says those arrested are a 27 year old male Polynesian, and a 30 year old female Polynesian. Both persons are charged with Cruelty to/or ill treatment of an 18 month old Child. They will be appearing in the Waitakere District Court on Thursday.

"There are no mitigating factors where children are concerned. The public need to take responsibility in all circumstances where there is evidence or concern for the safety and well being of children. The safety of children is paramount."

"Police want to know about any incidents where there is ill treatment or cruelty to children. These will be fully investigated and where necessary we will charge those responsible, without hesitation," Megan GOLDIE said.

Today's charges under the Crimes Act carry a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.
