Searching to resume tomorrow for missing man Graeme McNaughton

1 min read

Although hopes are fading for finding 78-year-old Stokes Valley man Graeme McNaughton alive, police dogs will again search selected areas of Stokes Valley tomorrow for clues about his disappearance.

Mr McNaughton, a retired DSIR scientist, was last seen heading in the direction of the Bodhinyanarama Monastery at around 4.30pm on Tuesday 31 July.

Police search and rescue coordinator Jo Holden says a leaflet drop in Stokes Valley led to several calls from members of the public who saw Mr McNaughton walking on Stokes Valley Road and Raukawa Street on Tuesday afternoon.

"One scenario we're considering is that he may have experienced a medical problem while out walking and perhaps entered someone's property seeking help or became disorientated and lost. There are some big properties and a lot of bush in the area where he was last seen.

"We again appeal to Stokes Valley people to help us by looking around their properties for any clues.

"Mr McNaughton's son traveled to Wellington last week to support his mother, who is obviously very distraught and desperately wants to find out what's happened to her husband," says Sergeant Holden.

Mr McNaughton is European, approximately 5'8" tall and of slim build. He has silver hair and was possibly wearing glasses. He is thought to have been wearing dark clothing, casual shoes and possibly a dark jacket with a stripe down the side.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Jo Holden on Tel: (04) 381 2000.
