Investigation into former deputy school principal

1 min read

Northland Police are asking the public to call its dedicated 0800 number if they have information that may assist the investigation into the sexual offending of a former deputy school principal.

At the Kaitaia District Court yesterday 37-year-old James Parker pleaded guilty to 49 sexual offence charges involving young children.

Detective Inspector Karyn Malthus says that the investigation remains open and police still want to hear from people who may be able to help, including potential victims.

Ms Malthus confirms that police are investigating complaints that date back several years and as a result cannot comment any further while the investigation is in progress.

The number to contact for this investigation is 0800 900 502.

With regard to the matter that was investigated in 2009, Ms Malthus says children were interviewed at the time and the matter could not be substantiated.

“Police reject any suggestion that we were responsible for any inaction. We took all steps possible within the law to make the appropriate notifications,” Ms Malthus said.

“Police did interview Parker and notified the school of their remaining concerns.

“We could not sustain any allegations and were therefore limited in what we could do.”

Ms Malthus said when further evidence came to light recently charges were laid and a thorough and professional investigation was undertaken.

Police are continuing to work with Child, Youth and Family and the Ministry of Education in supporting the victims and their families.
