Christchurch Police have confirmed the identity of the person whose body was found at the scene of a fire in Peterborough Street this week.

The deceased is Terence James Palmer, also known as Terry Baker, aged 62, an unemployed Christchurch man of no fixed abode.

Detective Sergeant John Gallagher says provisional findings from a post-mortem examination conducted yesterday indicate that the man died from smoke inhalation as a result of the fire, and there was no indication that he had been subject to any assault.

The scene examination at the Peterborough Street site has been completed today.

Detective Sergeant Gallagher says based on initial findings from the scene, there is nothing to suggest any suspicious element to the fire.

"However the investigation is ongoing and we are continuing to interview witnesses. We are not yet in a position to make a final determination on how the fire started."
