Robbery suspect comes forward after photos published

Christchurch Police have urged more shop owners to invest in security cameras after the suspect in an aggravated robbery handed himself in to Police today.

Police say a 21-year old man contacted Police through family this afternoon after seeing media reports about the robbery of the Wayside Dairy in Burwood on Wednesday [8 May].

He was arrested at a Kaiapoi address and has been charged with aggravated robbery, and will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

Detective Dylan Ross says the man had seen security camera images of himself in media reports and realised he could be clearly identified.

"He has done the right thing by coming forward to Police," he says.

"This points to the value of stores having good quality security cameras installed. These images have generated a positive response from the public and led to a quick arrest in this instance."
