Police have released the name of the baby who died following a car crash on State Highway 1 near Pareora, South Canterbury, on Wednesday.

He was Amadeus Tutunoa, aged 5 weeks and 3 days, of Timaru.

The child died at Timaru Hospital late on Wednesday night after having earlier been admitted with critical injuries.

Two adults and two older children who were in the same car were also assessed at hospital but discharged the same day. The other children received injuries of a minor nature. All five were members of the same family.

Police have confirmed the infant was in a rear-facing child restraint on the back seat behind the driver. At this stage there are no immediate safety concerns identified in relation to the child restraint. These matters will be the subject of the Coroner's enquiry in due course.

The Police investigation into the crash is continuing.
