Two envelopes containing white powder contained and tested

1 min read

Wellington Police along with the Fire Service and the New Zealand Army have contained and tested two envelopes containing white powder.

The first envelope was opened by a Parliamentary staff member in Hon Gerry Brownlee's Office this morning and was isolated by Police until an Army testing team could arrive. These tests have revealed the substance to be washing soda.

The second envelope was opened by a staff member at Hon Peter Dunne's electorate office in Johnsonville. Again, the envelope was contained by Police until a second Army testing unit could arrive to test the substance. This has also been confirmed as washing soda.

Wellington Area Commander, Inspector Jevon McSkimming says "It is far too early to say who sent the envelopes, however, we can confirm that the powder was harmless".

"An investigation has been launched and will be looking into who might have sent the envelopes. It is too early to stay whether the envelopes were connected.

Police are currently interviewing the staff members involved. It is understood that neither MP was in their offices at the time the envelopes were opened.
