Seventeen arrests at NZI Sevens

1 min read

Seventeen people were arrested and 48 evicted from Westpac Stadium on the opening day of the NZI Sevens in Wellington.

Inspector Kevin Riordan, commander of the Wellington Police operation, said the arrests were mainly for disorderly behaviour and trespass.

Many of those evicted or arrested will have their tickets cancelled for Saturday.

"We're reasonably pleased with the crowd behaviour," he said. "It was a generally happy atmosphere but a bit of pushing and shoving, minor disorder and some alcohol issues as the day worn on."

Inspector Riordan encourages fans heading to the Stadium tomorrow to pace themselves, drink plenty of water, moderate their alcohol intake and look after their mates.
