A 41 year old woman is in a serious condition in Auckland Hospital after a hit and run incident in Matakana at about midnight on Wednesday night.

Detective Kevin Blackman of the Warkworth CIB says an unknown vehicle struck the victim while she was walking in Govan Wilson Road, at Matakana.

"The vehicle did not stop," he said.

"The victim was found at 7.00am yesterday morning Thursday 7 February 2008.

"She was lying in a ditch beside the road. She had been on the ground for several hours before being discovered by a local resident walking their dog."

"The victim has serious head and body injuries and surgery has been necessary. This was carried out at Auckland Hospital yesterday."

"Whoever was responsible for this incident has known that they have hit something. There is a high possibility that the vehicle involved is damaged."

"I urge the person responsible to come forward so that Police can determine the full facts on what has happened," Detective Kevin Blackman said.

"Anyone with information that will assist us to locate the vehicle or the driver can call me direct at Warkworth CIB on 09 425 0836," he said.
