The elderly man who fell from his bicycle in Rutherford Street, near the Melling Bridge intersection a week ago died last night in Hutt Hospital.

William Campbell McEwen, 76 from Lower Hutt was cycling home at 8.10pm on Friday 12 December when he encountered a group of youths outside Motomart.

Detective Inspector Shane Cotter, said a post mortem examination was conducted today and police are awaiting the results of medical tests from that examination to reveal the cause of the death. This is likely to take several weeks.

Police have now spoken with several witnesses including the woman in the dressing gown and are getting a clearer picture of what occurred.

A 23 year old Paremata man who was arrested on Wednesday has been released on police bail to appear in the Lower Hutt District Court on Tuesday charged with assault.

Police still want to hear from people who saw Mr McEwen cycling anywhere along the Hutt Road, Pharazyn Street, Melling Bridge and Rutherford Street route between 7.30pm to 8.10pm last Friday night.

He was riding old style brown mountain bike with red mudguards. He was wearing a white bike helmet.
