IPCA report on Waitara Shooting - Police response

1 min read

Police Commissioner Howard Broad has welcomed the release of the Independent Police Conduct Authority's (IPCA) report into the shooting of Steven Wallace.

"The IPCA investigation into the Police handling of the situation is the final official review of the actions of those involved in the Steven Wallace shooting," says Mr Broad.

"The range of investigations and legal proceedings since the events of that tragic night has placed incredible pressures on the Police members and the families of all those involved.

"I hope this last official review, and the clarity its findings provide, allows this difficult chapter of our history to be closed.

"Justice Goddard's findings reflect that our staff acted appropriately, and in accordance with their training and policy, when dealing with a rapidly changing and difficult situation.

"I acknowledge Justice Goddard's commentary around some of our actions immediately after Mr Wallace's shooting, particularly with regard to providing first aid treatment. However I am confident that these, and other matters identified closer to the time have subsequently been addressed in our training and procedures."

Mr Broad says Police will incorporate Justice Goddard's recommendations on staff resuming duties after critical incidents into trauma policy.

With regard to the Authority's recommendation on drug and alcohol testing, Mr Broad says the Police Executive is already developing policy in this area.

"Justice Goddard's comments will add impetus to our work on drug and alcohol testing," he says.
