Boat recovered following the deaths of two fisherman

1 min read

A boat that sunk off the coast from Hokio Beach claiming the lives of two fisherman has been recovered.

A search and rescue operation was launched on Monday evening (16 March) after Steven Michael Militch (55) and Billy Tane Apiata (51) from Levin failed to return from a fishing trip.

In the early hours of the morning the tip of their boat was found protruding from the water. It later sunk.

Yesterday (Tuesday, 17 March) police divers found the boat approximately 75 metres from the location it had been seen during the search and rescue effort. It was upside down in the water but attempts to right the vessel and tow it back to Foxton were successful.

Maritime NZ inspectors will be examining the boat.
