Hamilton Police are crediting residents taking the time to report suspicious behaviour for the arrest of a group of gun totting thieves overnight.

Acting Sergeant Todd Hubbard said over the past couple of weeks Police had received complaints of a white car doing burnouts around Mahana Rd.

"Responding around midnight to further complaints staff noticed some suspicious activity at an address where the occupants of a van appeared to be unloading goods into a garage.

"On investigating we found a pistol and silencer in the van and a stolen white car in the garage. A follow up search recovered another pistol with a round up the spout and a shotgun," he said.

Three men and a woman were arrested in connection with the recovery of the stolen car and the firearms.

"I think it's important to note that it was as a result of members of the public taking the time to report suspicious activity that these arrests were made.

"We at the Police continue to encourage people to phone 111 if they see something untoward," said Mr Hubbard.
