All Whites' game firework burns investigation results in charges

1 min read

An investigation undertaken by Wellington Police has led to a 23 year old Blenhiem man being charged with wounding with reckless disregard for the safety of others.

The charge relates to injuries sustained by a 40 year old man attending the All Whites vs Mexico soccer match on 20 November 2013 at Westpac Stadium.

It is alleged that the lit firework was thrown by the 23 year old man from the back row of the stand setting fire to the victim and causing serious burns which required hospital treatment. Inquiries began after the extent of those injuries was brought to the attention of Police.

Inspector John Spence, Operation Commander for the event, says "Throwing a lit firework into a crowded stand is just plain stupid."

"We have made contact with the victim who is still receiving treatment for his injuries. He was relieved to know someone was being held accountable for such reckless behaviour."

The man will appear in Blenhiem District Court on Monday 27 January.
