Appeal for information after aggravated robbery

1 min read

Whanganui Police are investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred early this morning at the McDonalds restaurant on Victoria Avenue and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Just before 4am a man carrying a bag has entered the restaurant and presented a knife to a staff member and demanded money.

Detective Sergeant Phil Taylor, officer in charge of the investigation says: "The man had gone to an effort to cover his face and the staff member fearing for their safety as well as their colleagues handed over an unknown amount of cash."

"Shortly after this the offender has left the scene and got into a waiting vehicle that has then driven away. At this stage it is unknown how many people were in this vehicle, however it is described as a distinctive grey 1992 Subaru Legacy Saloon wagon, with a boot spoiler, and five spoke mag wheels.

"The four staff members that were present at the time did not sustain any injuries and have been offered the services of Victim Support. Officers are also continuing to speak to them to gather information."

A short time ago the Subaru was located by officers in Selwyn Crescent abandoned.

An examination of the scene and vehicle are underway.

"We want to speak to anyone that saw the Subaru vehicle or any suspicious activity between 8pm yesterday (22 June, 2015) and the early hours of this morning in the Liverpool Street, Victoria Avenue and Selwyn Crescent areas, says Detective Sergeant Taylor.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Taylor on (06) 349 0612. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
