Police investigating the unexplained death of Richard Hoani Herekiuha in Rotorua are releasing images of his bike and bike helmet as they continue to piece together the 43-year-old’s last movements.
Mr Herekiuha always used his bike to travel around Rotorua, and it is hoped the images will refresh the memories of people in the community who may not have known Mr Herekiuha but would have seen him around town.
More phone calls have been received over the weekend from the public indicating a will within the community to help police find out what happened to Mr Herekiuha. However there is still a window of five to six days between the last sighting of Mr Herekiuha and the discovery of him in the stream on Tuesday, 26 May.
His bike was found close to the track running alongside Otamatea Stream on Monday, 25 May; what police don’t know is how long it had been there. It would likely have been visible to users of the track, so this information is as important to police as sightings of Mr Herekiuha himself. His bike helmet, which has also been recovered, has a faint skull and crossbones symbol on it.
