Canterbury Police investigate burglary at Christchurch Netball Centre

2 min read

At approximately 9am on 8 February 2015 Canterbury Police were advised that five ICC Cricket World Cup laptops had been stolen from the accreditation centre set up in Christchurch Netball Centre.

Canterbury Police District Commander, Superintendent Gary Knowles, said “The five laptops were stolen overnight on Saturday/Sunday last week.  ICC have advised that the laptops do not contain any personal information and there is no threat to security around the Cricket World Cup 2015 events.  We are keen to hear from anyone who saw anyone behaving suspiciously near the Christchurch Netball Centre during the time the laptops were taken or have any information that may assist our ongoing investigation.”

“Canterbury Police are satisfied that the ICC has had sufficient security in place in the lead up to the Cricket World Cup launch tomorrow.  The laptops have been replaced and the ICC are confident there will be no ongoing disruption due to the theft of the securely password protected laptops” said Superintendent Knowles.

The 2015 Cricket World Cup launches tomorrow in North Hagley Park in Christchurch.  Canterbury Police urge those attending the launch or the matches to take some simple steps to protect themselves from opportunistic crime.

“Opportunistic thieves are known to take advantage of the opportunities people attending major sporting and social events create.  If you’re coming along to the Cricket World Cup launch tomorrow or attending any games remember to lock your doors and windows before leaving your motel, home or vehicle and keep valuables out of sight in a secure location.  If you’re watching the events at home, make sure your home is secure and people can’t walk in uninvited or unnoticed” explained Superintendent Knowles.

“Canterbury Police, ICC, Christchurch City Council and other government agencies and organisations are working together to create a safe, fun and enjoyable start to the 2015 Cricket World Cup.  If you take a few simple steps to prevent crime you can make sure your Cricket World Cup experience is memorable for all the right reasons.”

Canterbury Police will not be making any further comment or providing media interviews in relation to the stolen laptops.
