Car in river on West Coast - UPDATE

1 min read

A search and rescue operation is continuing south of Harihari on the West Coast, where a 4x4 vehicle entered the water and became stranded.

Police are currently searching for a 66 year-old man and a 2 year-old girl, says West Coast Area Commander, Inspector Melanie Aitken who is on site at the scene.

“Police, two helicopters and white water rescue teams have been at the Poerua River this afternoon and we have also utilised ground search and rescue staff to search river banks and surrounds.”

“Regretfully due to deteriorating weather conditions and river levels, we have needed to temporarily suspend searching which will resume once sufficient light and weather conditions permit.”

We have grave fears for the safety of the missing man and the child however we remain committed to finding and rescuing both people” says Inspector Aitken.

As this is an active operation, we will only be able to issue additional information as it becomes available.
