Canterbury Police are urging the driver of a blue Subaru that was involved in a hit and run on the intersection of Yaldhurst Road and Avonhead Road to contact them.

Constable Kurt Gillibrand says witnesses called emergency services after a nine year old girl was struck by a west-bound blue Subaru as she attempted to cross Yaldhurst Road with another child shortly before 8.20am this morning.  “The driver is understood to pulled over and stopped but drove off after a witness approached him.  Witnesses last saw the vehicle driving along Yaldhurst Road towards Russley Road.”

The driver is described as being a 25-30 years old man with darkish skin, possibly Indian or Polynesian.

The witnesses, rightly, focussed their attention on helping the injured girl and looking after the other child while they waited for emergency services to arrive.  Unfortunately we do not have the registration of the vehicle but the attached CCTV image shows the blue Subaru driving along Yaldhurst road.

The children were both in shock and Police understand that the girl was treated in Christchurch Hospital for moderate injuries.

Police would like to thank the members of the public who called for help and stayed to look after the children.

Police urge the driver of the blue Subaru and anyone else who witnessed the incident to call Christchurch Police Station on 03 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
