Child's death investigated

1 min read

Police at the Moana Ave, Onehunga address where the body of a young child was discovered this morning, are in the process of setting up a scene examination to try and determine what happened in the home.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin says Police were called to attend the address shortly after 4am and arrived within five minutes.

"On arrival, officers discovered the body of a young child and immediately closed the scene down. The woman who had called Police was removed from the address and taken to hospital for medical treatment for some superficial injuries. Her further medical needs are being assessed.

"Our staff are currently carrying out area inquiries in the street and immediate neighbourhood. At this stage we are not aware of any reports of a disturbance overnight or the presence of others at the address where the child lived."

Police are in the process of locating and notifying the child's next of kin. The priority today is to get well underway with the scene examination, to remove the child's body from the address and to ensure family are notified appropriately.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation, known as Operation Isobar, should call Auckland City Police on 09 302 6641 or email jez277@police.govt.nz
