Emergency Services have now left the scene of a single vehicle crash that occurred just before 5.30am today (10 November 2014) on SH1 just before the Ashley River bridge.  The State Highway is open as normal.

The male driver and sole occupant was freed from the vehicle just before 9am by the Fire Service and has been taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter with minor to moderate injuries.

The truck and trailer was travelling south along SH1 when it is believed to have veered across the road and rolled down the bank, becoming entangled in vegetation.  A north-bound vehicle narrowly avoided a head on collision with the truck.

Police say the driver was extremely lucky to avoid serious injury and ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them by calling 03 363 7400 and selecting option 5.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.
