Off-duty officers prove Police are never really off duty

Two off-duty officers sprung into action to prevent an attempted burglary and theft in Hastings on Tuesday night.

Senior Sergeant KJ and Detective Senior Sergeant Sally spotted a vehicle pulling into a nearby driveway at speed.

They went to check what was going on and, when they identified themselves as police officers, the driver fled in the vehicle while the passenger ran into a nearby property.

Sally reported the suspicious vehicle to Police who were quickly on scene, and with the help of Eagle helicopter, locating and arrested the driver. The vehicle was allegedly involved in a fleeing driver incident earlier in the day.

KJ went into a nearby property to look for the other occupant of the vehicle, and found them hiding under a tree.

A 49-year-old woman has been charged with theft of a vehicle and unlawfully being in an enclosed yard. She is due to appear in the Hastings District Court on 6 March.

A 22-year-old woman has been charged with failing to stop, being an unlicensed driver, dangerous driving and receiving. She is due to reappear in the Hastings District Court on 21 March.

KJ and Sally say, “we are never really off duty and are always ready to keep our communities safe.”
