Fisherman drowns at Kaikoura

FISHERMAN DROWNED AT KAIKOURA

At 9.56am today Emergency Services were advised that a 50yr old man had been swept out to sea while fishing at the Clarence river mouth, Kaikoura.

 

Senior Sergeant Koefoed of Tasman Police stated that ‘The man was fishing with a friend at the Clarence river mouth when he was hit by a wave and washed out to sea. The man was seen floating for some time before he was lost sight of.  A local helicopter located the man shortly thereafter but, sadly, he had drowned. The deceased was recovered by a local fisherman and has been returned to Kaikoura. The deceased was a local man but is unable to be named until next of kin have been advised. Police have now referred the matter to The Coroner’.
