Southern District Police are currently responding to an incident on the Old Man Range near Roxburgh where a group of 36 people have become stuck on the Waikaia Bush Road as a result of severe weather.

The group were in the area on a Four Wheel Drive trip consisting of 13 vehicles.

Police and the National Rescue Coordination Centre were notified by separate parties at around 6:25pm on Sunday evening after they became stuck and were unable to proceed.

The group is equipped with a Locator Beacon which has enabled Police to identify their location.

Severe weather conditions are hampering the rescue response, preventing search and rescue teams reaching the group by land and air.

Police remain in cell phone contact with the stranded group who are safe and well, and although not planning for an overnight stay, are reasonably well equipped with extra clothing, food and water.

Police are monitoring the situation with Search and Rescue teams in the area ready to be deployed when the weather permits.
