Kaitaia Incident - UPDATE

Northland Police are continuing to investigate after a man was stabbed in Kaitaia this afternoon.

Early enquiries made by Police have established a male offender was reportedly attempting to break into a vehicle in Kaitaia Township. Members of the public have intervened and the male has then left the scene.

The man has then gone to Mathews Avenue where the altercation with the victim has taken place at around 2.15pm.

The exact circumstances of the altercation are yet to be established, however at this stage it does not appear that the offender and victim are known to each.

The victim, a  22 year-old male remains in Whangarei Hospital in a serious but stable condition with a stab wound to his stomach.

Police are following positive lines of enquiry, with a scene examination underway and a number of witnesses being spoken too.

We ask anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour in Kaitaia or the surrounding areas to call 111 immediately.
