A senior Waikato Police officer said there are a number of learnings that can be taken from the circumstances surrounding how a Fijian woman came to be fighting for her life in Waikato Hospital.
District Shift manager, Senior Sergeant Dave Litton, said emergency services were called to an Ulster St, Hamilton motel about 4pm yesterday after the woman was found unresponsive in a swimming pool.
"She was found by a member of the party she was with who raised the alarm and other motel guests assisted in recovering the woman from the water and commenced CPR until ambulance officers arrived.
"Attending fire-fighters and St John ambulance staff managed to get her to the point where she was showing signs of life and she was taken to Waikato Hospital where she is currently described as being in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit."
Mr Litton said there is no doubt what occurred is a tragedy but perhaps this woman's misfortune may help to save others from being caught out in similar predicaments.
"Without commenting on the specifics of this case, Police would advise against people swimming alone and ask that you ascertain the depth of the water before you get in.
"If diving or jumping into a pool, lake or river, look before you leap and be mindful of your abilities and those of your group before entering the water."
