Machete used in failed liquor store robbery

Police in Putaruru are trying to identity a male who threatened liquor store staff with a machete last night (Wednesday, 23 December).

The incident occurred at approximately 9.50pm on Arapuni Street, Putaruru.

The offender demanded money, but one of the staff members grabbed for the machete causing the offender to run off empty-handed. He dropped the machete as he ran along Arapuni Street; last seen running right onto Glenshea Street.

A staff member was treated at the scene by ambulance for a minor injury his hand caused by grabbing the machete.

The offender is believed to be in his teens or early 20s and is described as short and stocky, approximately 5ft 5ins tall wearing a black jacket with no sleeves, black cap and white shoes.
