Message for Waikato motorists: our roads are not a playground

Waikato Police are urging motorcyclists in particular to take care after a spate of crashes and speeding incidents over the weekend.

Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace says "We attended three motorcycle crashes over the weekend, none of which involved other vehicles."

The first incident involved a male rider who crashed his motorcycle on Friday evening at approximately 6.30pm on Ohaupo Road, just south of Hamilton.

The second occurred just after noon on Sunday on Ohautira Road near Raglan. The male driver was admitted to Waikato Hospital with injuries.

The third incident occurred on the Kopu Hikuia Road near Thames at around 6pm on Sunday.  In this instance the male rider was airlifted to Auckland hospital with serious injuries.

"For various reasons these riders have come off their bikes and sustained a range of injuries."

"We also pulled over two motorcyclists for riding at some incredibly dangerous speeds - one at 186km/hr and another at 129km/hr.  We also pulled over one disqualified motorcyclist."

"My message to motorcyclists is please, remember how vulnerable you are.  We saw just how vulnerable a car was when up against a milk tanker on Friday in Waitoa, in which two young lives were tragically lost.

"The stakes are high for motorcyclists all the time and they need to have a heightened level of awareness and make a concerted effort to keep their skills current and drive to the conditions."

"As we gear up for summer and the traffic picks up on popular coastal routes, we want motorcyclists and all other road users to take a moment to remember that driving/riding is not a solo pursuit - one person's actions behind the wheel or atop a motorcycle directly affects others."
