Motorcyclist killed in highway crash

1 min read

One man has died in a collision between a truck and a motorcycle on State Highway One.

The crash occurred at approximately 9.20am at Piarere, about two kilometres south of the SH29 intersection.

Initial assessment indicates that the motorcycle has crossed the centreline and collided with the truck travelling in the opposite direction. The motorcyclist has been separated from his bike and the bike has then caught fire.

The motorcycle rider died at the scene and police are currently working to locate and notify his family. No further details will be released until his next of kin have been notified. The truck driver was shaken but not hurt.

The road is likely to remain closed for some hours and diversions are in place at SH27 and SH29.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area or expect delays.

A serious crash investigation is underway to establish what caused the bike to cross the centreline.
