1 min read

Police can now confirm they have launched a homicide inquiry into the death of a man, whose body was found on Otaki Beach on 12 September, 2013.

The man’s identity can also now be confirmed. He is Edward Tahakura, aged 30, from Huntly.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said: “A post mortem has been completed and officers are working with the Coroner in order to have Edward’s body returned to his family.”

A 24-year-old man was arrested late last night (13 September) in Hamilton in relation to Edward’s death and has been charged with murder. He will appear in the Hamilton District Court today.

“The Police investigation will be on-going as we speak to Edward’s family and friends, and the man charged with his murder. We will be establishing why Edward and the man were at Otaki Beach. Outside of this I cannot discuss any aspects of our homicide investigation any further.”

The scene examination at the beach is now completed.

“I want to thank the Otaki community and local media for their assistance in our area inquires,” said Mr Sheridan.

Police seek the support of media in respecting the privacy of Edward’s family at this difficult time.
