As students kick off the school year with celebrations Palmerston North Police want to remind those planning parties to register them to ensure a fun and safe night is had by all.

The party register was set up in 2008 as a means of reducing the risk of disorder caused by gatecrashers at private parties.

While the pack is aimed at teenagers and their parents or legal guardians, those who are over 18 and are thinking about hosting a party can still register their event with the Palmerston North Police.

Organisers of parties that register their events will receive tips and tactics about how to control the party, information about trespass, behaviour offences, and noise control.

Contact is made with the organiser before the event and again during the evening to check all is well. Patrol officers are also made aware of the event giving them the option to do the occasional discreet drive-by.

"Another tip to avoid gatecrashers at your party is thinking twice before you upload the event details to social media. You can still get the message out to those you want to invite without broadcasting it to unwelcome guests," says Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Crawford, Palmerston North Response Manager.

"The easy register pack is now on the Police website so to save time you can print it out, fill it in, and drop it off at the station.

"Police want you to have a great night celebrating with your mates but we can't do this alone. You can ensure your party is enjoyable and safe by encouraging responsible drinking, looking out for your mates, and registering it with Police, he says.

You can find the pack on the Police website via this link:

You can also contact the Palmerston North Police on (06) 351 3600 or call into the station to register and pick up a party information pack.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Sara Stavropoulos on 027 702 0850.
