There’s plenty of action for the public to see both on and off the water at Te Papa on Saturday when police join with other emergency services and Te Papa for a special school holidays expo.
Wellington District’s mobile police base will be parked up on the Te Papa forecourt for the day, along with the Police National Dive Squad truck, the AOS command unit and a police dog ute. Public Safety Team officers will be on hand to talk with visitors to the mobile base, along with officers from the other specialist units.
Sergeant Craig Pickering of Wellington Police Maritime Unit, says the public is in for a special treat with some on the water displays involving emergency services starting at 1pm with Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving and a CentrePort tug showing their capabilities.
Then at 1.40pm the police display begins with a scenario in which a police officer, playing the part of an offender, tries to flee police by jumping in the water from the historic floating crane Hikitea. Westpac’s rescue helicopter will swing into action and work with the Police National Dive Squad, Wellington Police’s Lady Elizabeth IV and crew to ‘rescue’ the fleeing man.
This will be followed at 2pm with other displays of high ropes and Fire Service demonstrations inside Te Papa.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with other agencies in this Te Papa initiative,” Sergeant Pickering says. “It’s also a great way of mixing with members of the public in a family friendly event.”
The emergency services vehicles will start getting in place at Te Papa from early Saturday morning but most of the public displays will be running, weather permitting, from 11am to 4pm. Sunday is the postponement day.
