Police investigating two Hamilton burglaries

2 min read

Police are investigating two incidents of burglary from elderly homeowners this week in Te Rapa, Hamilton.

On both occasions the homeowner has been outside in the garden and left the house unlocked. The offender has taken the opportunity to enter the home and steal a handbag and wallet including cash.

Detective Paul Slater says Police are following strong lines of enquiry to catch the offender for both offences which are believed to be linked.

Detective Slater says the two incidents are a timely reminder to all homeowners about the actions they can take to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

“It is important to be aware of what is happening in your neighbourhood and if you see something suspicious report it to Police. Also get to know your neighbour, keep in touch and watch out for each other,” said Detective Slater.

Other tips for homeowners to keep themselves and their property safe include -

• Always lock up. Burglars often enter through unlocked doors and windows or they take advantage of weak locks.
• Install good quality locks and use them. Check that you will be able to escape easily in a fire or other emergency.
• Use a reputable locksmith.
• Lock the front door if you’re in the back garden.
• Lock your house if you are having a rest or doing something that needs a lot of concentration, such as studying or sewing.
• Lock away tools and ladders because burglars could use them to break in.
• Lock garden sheds and your garage if you can.
• Sensor lights are an excellent security device because they light up automatically if somebody moves nearby.
• Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they don’t provide hiding places for burglars.
• Keep windows secure.
• Guard your keys. Don’t have personal details on your keys (such as your name, phone number or address). Don’t leave house keys with your car keys when your car is being serviced.
• Don’t invite burglars in – never leave notes on a door stating that you are out.
• When you go away, make sure your home looks ‘lived in’.

As Police are continuing to investigate the two robbery incidents in Te Rapa Detective Slater would like to hear from anyone who has information about suspicious behaviour in the area or if they know someone who has come upon some unexpected cash.

Information can be shared with Detective Slater via the Hamilton Police on 07 8586200 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
