Huntly Police are appealing to the public for information following a sexual assault in a local reserve overnight.

Acting Detective Sergeant Scott Neilson, of the Western Waikato CIB, said that at about 12.30am this morning a young woman was assaulted in the north end of the reserve between James Henry Crescent and Rosser Street, Huntly.

“After walking her friend home, the victim was returning back through the reserve, towards James Henry Crescent, when a man grabbed her from behind.”

“The woman was sexually assaulted before fighting the man off and running for help.” said Mr Neilson.

The man is described as a Caucasian, late teens or early 20’s and of skinny build.

“This is a terrible experience for anyone to have to go through and the advice we want to give the public is that where possible, please stick to well lit paths at night and try to keep in groups of two or more when out walking”. said Mr. Neilson.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this assault or was in the James Henry Crescent and Rosser Street area at about 12.30am last night.

Police would also like to speak to anyone that saw or has knowledge of an older style black flat deck ute that may frequent the Huntly area.

Anyone with information is ask to contact Acting Detective Sergeant Scott Neilson on 021 1910993 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
