While Hamilton Police step up patrols in the area, investigators are seeking the public's assistance in locating a man wanted in connection with an alleged sexual assault against a schoolgirl near the City's water tower on Wednesday.
Detective Sergeant Kris Clarke of the Hamilton Child Protection Team said the attack happened as the 15-year-old victim was walking on Ruakiwi Rd by the water tower next to Lake Rotoroa about 3.30pm.
"The girl was grabbed at knifepoint and dragged to the southern side of the water tower where she was raped. She has made her way home and raised the alarm and Police are working with her, the girl's family and Victim Support to get her the help that she needs.
"The offender has been described as a male Caucasian with black hair with a tinge of white with the sides of his head shaved with a "Z" on each side. Aged in his mid twenties and of medium build the man was also described as having a small moustache."
Ms Clarke said the offender's clothing was described as a black jersey with a zip on the front and black shorts with a bit of brown on them. There was no known vehicle linked to the attack.
"Someone must recognise this description or know this guy and it is imperative that if you have any information, that you contact Police either by asking for myself on 07 858 6200 or by ringing 111.
"This type of incident is obviously traumatic to the victim and also to other people who frequent the area. While we are stepping up our presence in the area we ask that the public maintain their vigilance and contact Police about any suspicious behaviour."
